In 1934, Hollywood photographer A.L. "Whitey" Schafer took this staged photo which mocked the Motion Picture Production Code (aka Hays Code), a set of moral guidelines that were applied to American films that were released from 1934 to 1968. The photo attempted to violate as many rules as possible in one image. The Motion Picture Production Code stipulated the following:"No picture shall be produced which will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience shall never be thrown to the side of crime, wrong-doing, evil or sin. Correct standards of life, subject only to the requirements of drama and entertainment, shall be presented. Law, natural or human, shall not be ridiculed, nor shall sympathy be created for its violation.Prohibitions on:1. Nudity2. Suggestive dances3. Discussions of sexual perversity4. Superfluous use of liquor5. Ridicule of religion6. Miscegenation7. Lustful kissing8. Scenes of passion"The Hays Code stipulated that a kiss can only last 3 seconds. If you watch Hitchco*ck's movie, Notorious (1946), there's a kiss scene that lasts two and a half minutes. The actors just break off every 3 seconds.https://lnkd.in/eHzkUt2Q

The whole creative department of the agency had been working on the Dr Pepper Australian launch brief - for months.Art Director, Rog, and I were getting nowhere, and frankly put this up as a bit of a laugh... scribbled up in a panic half-an-hour before a presentation. It was kind of on-brief... I guess. The brief was difficult. And probably wrong. It positioned Dr Pepper as "unusual" tasting. The "Americanness" of it was another touchpoint. This was the era of films like Independence Day.What I did like about the script was the notion of something huge seen through the lens of the laconic Australian archetype (at the time).Anyway, we presented it. The client liked it. It researched OK.I think 3rd best out of 6 ideas. And that was enough to send us on our way to the Big Apple and Lady Liberty. The ad was directed by the late, great Peter Cherry, one of the founders of AWARD with the brilliant Paul Butterworth in charge of special effects. It cost $1.1m dollars to make... these were the early days of CGI... and I think the execution more than stands up today, technically. It was also a bit of an unmitigated disaster.Too apologetic about the product.Australians, as it turned out, wouldn't "get used to it".But it was a wonderful piece of cinematography and I'm still thrilled to have had the opportunity to shoot it.Working with an American crew (who had worked with Tom Cruise the week before). The way they could seamlessly shut down bits of NYC to accommodate us.Including Liberty Island. I climbed the statue by myself in about 15 minutes - it usually took about 4 hours of queueing alone. And flying in a chopper in and out of various streets and buildings of Manhattan. This was pre-9/11.One of those special things that happen in a career... Funnily enough, I think the ad is better today than it was back then.Nostalgia, eh.#specialeffects #cinematography #copywriting #americana #iconic #australia #soda
