A great espresso martini has become one of the modern classics. Even though it's not a true martini, that hasn't stopped it from becoming a popular drink found on co*cktail menus everywhere.

We love it when we go to brunch because it pairs well with waffles and frittatas. But it's also great at happy hour, when the caffeine can offer a little pick me up after a long day in the office.

What I love about the best espresso martini recipe is that it's easy to make at home whenever I'm in the mood for a creamy co*cktail with a foamy top. If you love coffee, then get your shaker ready for a co*cktail you'll love from the first sip!

Ingredients

  • Espresso - made with espresso powder or a shot of espresso. Cold brew concentrate is also a good option.
  • Vodka - any high quality vodka works best. We like Ketel One and Grey Goose. Your favorite vodka is also a great choice.
  • Baileys Irish Cream - makes this a creamy espresso martini.
  • Kahlua - this is a coffee liqueur made with coffee and rum. Other possibilities include Tia Maria and Mr. Black.
  • Simple syrup - a small amount of simple syrup adds a nice bit of sweetness. You can omit it if you prefer a more intense coffee flavor.
  • Coffee beans - three whole coffee beans added to the top of the drink is the classic garnish.

Equipment

The Best espresso Martini is shaken in a co*cktail shaker with ice. I highly recommend Elevated Craft (not affiliated) because it's made of stainless steel and won't break if it slips out of your hands. It also seals well and doesn't leak at all! These shakers have really upped our at-home co*cktail making.

You'll need a jigger to measure out your alcohol, or a measuring cup that includes fluid ounces.

Presentation is everything, so you'll want to have a nice co*cktail glass for your drink. I recommend martini glasses or a coupe glass.

This is an overview of the recipe. Scroll to the bottom of the post for precise amounts and a printable recipe card.

Place your glasses in the freezer.

Add espresso, vodka, Baileys, Kahlua, and simple syrup in a co*cktail shaker. Add one cup of ice cubes to the shaker and seal the top.

Shake with rapid back and forth movements for about 20 to 30 seconds. You might start channeling the 1988 version of Tom Cruise, and that's okay.

Get your chilled glasses out of the freezer. Strain your perfect espresso martini and top with coffee beans. Enjoy!

Tips

Fresh espresso is the best choice, but if you don't have an espresso machine then using an espresso powder to make a shot of espresso is a great substitute.

Cold brew coffee concentrate can also be substituted.

Regular brewed coffee will not give you the intense coffee flavor needed for this perfect after-dinner drink so for best results, stick to espresso.

Experiment with adding different liquors such as Amaretto, Frangelico, or Rumchata.

How do I make a classic espresso martini?

A classic espresso martini is made with 1 ounce espresso, 2 ounces vodka, .5 ounce Kahlua, and .5 ounce simple syrup. Add to a shaker with a handful of ice, shake until frosty then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with 3 coffee beans.

How do I make simple syrup?

You should never have to buy simple syrup because it is easy to make your own. Use a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water. For example, mix one cup of sugar and one cup of water to a sauce pan over medium heat until sugar is completely dissolved, stirring occasionally. Store in refrigerator for several weeks.

Why does an espresso martini have three coffee beans floating on top?

The three coffee beans that garnish an espresso martini are meant to symbolize health, wealth, and happiness.
