Homemade bagels using just two ingredients? Yes! And this easy bagel recipe is not only delicious, it's also super fun to make.
I am constantly amazed at the magic a fermented food or two can do in the kitchen—and this 2-ingredient bagel recipe is a perfect example. All you'll need for this "yogurt bagel" recipe is, you guessed it, some Greek yogurt as well as self rising flour.
Oh and if you don't have any of this particular flour on hand or want to make it gluten free, you can also make your own self rising flour using regular flour, baking powder and salt.
Did you know?
With just two ingredients at play in this bagel recipe, the star fermented food Greek yogurt plays a critical role in its success. In addition to providing needed moisture to hold the dough together, it also acts as a leavening agent when combined with the self rising flour. It's acidity reacts with the baking powder in the flour and forms carbon dioxide gas, creating air bubbles and giving the bagels a lighter consistency more like the real thing. Oh, and the protein and tanginess of the yogurt also contribute to its chewy and realistic bagel flavor we all know and love.
If you're looking for other great recipes using Greek yogurt, you have to try these cranberry orange muffins or this apple crisp with whipped yogurt. And for another quick and easy dough recipe, try this simple homemade pizza dough. 🙂

❤️ Why you'll love this recipe
- Yes, really only 2 ingredients required!
- Great way to use up extra Greek yogurt
- No boiling necessary
- Easy to customize with your favorite toppings
- Fun to make for all ages
🌿 Ingredients
As promised, only two ingredients are required to make this easy bagel recipe a success. And if you'd like to add any toppings, the only other thing you'll need besides the toppings is a whisked egg and a little water to make the egg wash. (Hint: my favorite topping is everything bagel seasoning.)
If you're really ambitious, you can also make your own yogurt (just make sure to strain it using the instructions for making Greek yogurt.) 🙂
See recipe card below for exact quantities.
📝 Instructions
Okay, ready to roll up your sleeves and learn how to make homemade bagels? Let's do this.
Step 1: Add your flour and yogurt to a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Mix them together until a thick dough forms. If necessary, add a little extra yogurt and keep stirring.
Step 3: Dust a little flour on a clean surface and knead the dough with your hands for a few minutes before forming a ball. If necessary if the dough is not sticking together, add a little extra yogurt and continue to knead.
Step 4: Use a pastry cutter or knife to cut the dough into four even sections.
Step 5: Form each of the sections into a ball and then poke your thumb through the center of each to keep forming into bagels. Don't worry if they're not perfect!
Step 6: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place your bagels on the sheet.
Step 7: If you'd like to add toppings to your bagels, use a pastry brush to lightly coat each bagel with the egg wash.
Pro tip: If you don't have an egg on hand, you could also substitute olive oil or plain water.
Step 8: Sprinkle everything bagel seasoning or your other favorite seasonings over each bagel and bake at 350°F for 22-24 minutes (gluten free bagels may need up to 5 extra minutes of baking time.)
Let bagels cool for 5 minutes on a wire rack before serving.
📋 Substitutions
Since we're only dealing with a couple of ingredients in this bagel recipe, there aren't a lot of substitution possibilities, but please see notes below for a few of the key options.
- Self rising flour - unfortunately you can't substitute all-purpose flour, bread flour or cake flour here; if you have all purpose flour, baking powder and salt on hand, though, you can make your own homemade self rising flour
- Gluten free - to make gluten free bagels, use the recipe for self rising flour and follow the instructions to make gluten free (you can also purchase GF self rising flour)
- Greek yogurt - feel free to use any kind of Greek yogurt, but keep in mind that since each yogurt brand has its own unique consistency, you'll want to just add a cup of yogurt to the recipe to start, and add a little extra if necessary; you can also try whole milk regular yogurt, but results may vary depending on its thickness
- Egg - to make this recipe egg-free but with bagel toppings, you can substitute a little olive oil or even water to coat the bagels with and hold the toppings in place while they bake
📖 Variations
Here are a few of my favorite bagel flavors for this recipe:
- Everything bagels - top with everything bagel seasoning
- Sesame bagels - top with sesame seeds
- Poppy seed bagels - top with poppy seeds
- French toast bagels - top with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar
Note that for any of the toppings, you'll need to first coat the bagels with egg wash in order to hold the toppings in place (or see substitutions above for non-egg options.)
🔪 Equipment
I used the following equipment to make these homemade bagels:
- large mixing bowl
- silicone spatula
- cutting board
- pastry cutter
- baking sheet
- parchment paper
- pastry brush (optional, for egg wash)
🍱 Storage
Two ingredient bagels will stay fresh for up to 5 days in an airtight container in the fridge, or for up to 2 months in the freezer.
🎉 Top tip
Make sure you knead your dough for at least a few minutes if not more, and you may also want to let it sit up to 10 minutes before you start kneading if you have a little extra time. This will give the flour a chance to become fully hydrated, and may make the dough easier to work with as you knead and form your bagels.
Enjoy!
💭 FAQ
Can I use regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt to make 2 ingredient bagels?
Greek yogurt is recommended for this recipe due to having an appropriately thick consistency necessary to form the dough. You can try using a whole milk regular yogurt instead, but results may vary depending on its thickness.
How can I make 2 ingredient bagels more flavorful?
You can use your favorite bagel toppings to add flavor to your homemade bagels, such as everything bagel seasoning, sesame seeds or cinnamon sugar.
What if my bagel dough is too sticky or too dry?
If your bagel dough is sticking to your hands as you knead, add a little extra self rising flour and continue to knead. If it's not sticking together yet, add some extra yogurt a little at a time until the
Can I make 2 ingredient bagels gluten free?
Yes. You'll need to either buy gluten free self rising flour for this recipe, or make your own self rising flour following the instructions to make gluten free. You may also need to increase the baking time by up to 5 extra minutes as GF flour can take longer to bake through.
